The great rose windows of the Middle Ages were made without the aid of sophisticated tools in a time when art and craft were not separate fields. Collaboration was more important than personal expression through individual authorship; and content was supported by a central belief system. Even if we do not have the architectural spaces to contain such grand visions we can still create them by the use of modern virtual technology. The rose window project is a structured template designed to involve individual participation in a collective process. Click on images to see more on the sample panels...

Reconfiguring the Rose for the New Millennium Using the intense luminosity of the computer screen to simulate stained glass, a virtual rose window can be visualised via the communication technology of the new millennium. This project aims to produce a unique interpretation of a rose window that celebrates the the diverse nature of being female in the 21st century by adapting the traditional stylization of medieval glass and combining it multicultural images from all over the world. This is a visionary project capable of putting women's artistic and craft skills - also powerful imagery - into the arts arena on a scale not seen since Judy Chicago's Dinner Party.©DA Whitbread MA(RCA), School of Arts, Design, Media and Culture, University of Sunderland, UK.
